I noticed that engineering leadership dominates Claude Code purchasing decisions, with Director of Engineering roles at 17%, Head of Engineering at 11%, and VP of Engineering at 9%. These buyers are focused on AI-driven productivity and modernization. They're hiring for teams that can move faster with AI assistance, as one posting seeks someone to "establish best practices for prompt engineering, context management, and workflow integration" while another wants leaders who can "champion new ways of working" with AI embedded into design and development processes.

The day-to-day users are full-stack engineers, backend developers, and product designers who are expected to use AI coding tools as a core part of their workflow. Multiple postings explicitly state that candidates must be "comfortable and experienced working this way" with tools like Cursor and Claude Code. These practitioners are using AI agents for code generation, leveraging AI to "accelerate delivery" and "improve code quality," and working in environments where "AI fundamentally changes how software is built."

The pain points center on velocity and competitive advantage through AI adoption. Companies want to "replace gut feel with a rigorous science of growth" and achieve "measurable productivity gains through AI-assisted development practices." One posting captures the urgency perfectly: "We expect all team members to be fluent in AI" and use it to "accelerate market entry and drive business transformation." Another seeks engineers who can help reach "80%+ AI-generated code" across the development lifecycle. These organizations see AI coding tools as essential infrastructure for staying competitive.

I noticed that Claude Code's typical customers are predominantly technology builders and service providers. These companies aren't just using software, they're creating it. The majority are software development agencies, IT consultancies, digital agencies, and SaaS product companies. They build custom applications, develop web platforms, create mobile apps, and provide technical consulting. Many describe themselves as building "solutions" for other businesses rather than selling to end consumers directly.

These companies span a wide range of maturity levels, though I see three distinct clusters. There's a significant group of small agencies and consultancies with 11-50 employees and no disclosed funding. There's another cluster of venture-backed companies at Series A through C, typically with 50-200 employees. And there's a smaller set of larger enterprises with 500+ employees, including some post-IPO companies. The funding stages range from bootstrapped to billions in funding, but the common thread is that they're all actively building or shipping software products.

I noticed that Claude Code users are distinctly developer-first companies building in public with modern, collaborative workflows. The extremely high correlation with Cursor in open source repositories (3118.5x) alongside Docker Hub tells me these are engineering-led organizations that embrace open development practices and containerized infrastructure. They're not just using AI tools casually. They're investing in the full ecosystem of AI-assisted development.

The pairing of Cursor and Claude for Work makes perfect sense together. These companies want AI deeply integrated into their development workflow, both at the individual coding level and across their broader work processes. The strong presence of Docker Hub alongside these AI tools suggests teams that ship frequently and value reproducible environments. When I see Golinks appearing 314x more often, it signals companies focused on internal efficiency and knowledge sharing, which aligns with the collaborative nature of open source development. Ashby's correlation points to companies that are hiring aggressively for technical talent and want modern, streamlined recruiting tools.

The full stack reveals product-led companies in growth mode. These aren't enterprise sales organizations with heavy go-to-market machinery. They're building products that developers discover and adopt organically, often through open source channels. The emphasis on developer tooling, internal efficiency tools like Golinks, and modern recruiting infrastructure suggests Series A to Series C startups scaling their engineering teams rapidly while maintaining velocity.
